9.
Herbs and Spices That Can Unclog Your Arteries

Herbs such as cayenne, which can help improve blood circulation
and increase the action of the heart, and horsetail, which
strengthens artery walls, can both have a place in an artery-
clearing strategy.

Skullcap is another herb that has been said to increase the levels
of ‘good’ cholesterol in the body. Valerian and lemon balm relax
blood vessel walls and enhance blood flow and bilberry is known
for its ability to fortify artery walls for smooth blood flow around
the body.

10.
Red Yeast Rice Can Help Unclog Arteries and Reduce Heart
Attack Risk

Red yeast rice, a herbal therapy that closely resembles the statin
drug Mevacor, is though to be effective at lowering cholesterol.
In a review of 93 randomized trials from China involving around
10,000 patients, scientists concluded that red yeast rice can
significantly lower levels of LDL cholesterol and raise levels of
HDL compared with placebo.(2006, Liu J, Zhang J, Shi Y, et al.
“Chinese red yeast rice ( Monascus purpureus) for primary
hyperlipidemia: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials”.)

According to another 2006 study from the Chinese Academy of
Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College, Beijing red
yeast rice can reduce cholesterol levels and benefit the arteries.
According to the research into 5,000 people with heart disease,
red yeast rice reduced heart attack rate by around 45 percent.

Red yeast rice is widely used in Chinese medicine but its effects
have not been fully tested in the US. It could also react with
statin medication so check with your physician before using the
supplement.

Update:

11.
Exercise Can Reduce Stiff Arteries

Get moving if you want to reverse stiff arteries. In a 2012 study
from the University of New South Wales, researchers discovered
that overweight men who were put on a 12-week exercise
program reduced the stiffness on their arteries.

The study, led by Dr. H. Heydari, found that "arterial stiffness
significantly decreased at rest" and during a special stress test.

12.
Flax seeds Reduce Ability of Fat to Cling to Artery Walls

Flax seeds, like walnuts, are rich in alpa-linolenic acid. In fact,
flax seeds are the richest plant source of alpha-linolenic acid --
about 55% of the fat in flax seeds. Also, about 28% of the
weight of each flax seed is soluble fiber. Numerous i have
confirmed that both alpha-linolenic acid and fiber have strong
cardio-protective properties. But, until recently, scientists didn't
know how.

But this mystery now may be nearly solved. A 2013 study from
Grigore T. Popa University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Romania
found eating flax seeds helps to keep your arteries from
clogging up with fat, even if you also eat a high fat diet.

In this study, lab rats were fed a diet consisting of 40% lard.
They were also fed 15 grams of ground flax seeds (15 grams of
flax seeds for each 100 grams of total food).

At the end of the experiment, the scientists discovered that the
incorporation of flax seeds in the lard-based diet prevented the
adhesion of leukocytes and platelets to the otherwise smooth
inner lining of artery walls (the endothelium). After these cells
attach, your artery walls become rough, which makes it easier
for cholesterol to attach and clog your arteries. These specialized
leukocytes and platelet cells have been implicated in other
research as crucial triggers  to the cascade of inflammation-
related events that lead to full-fledged artherosclerosis.

Of course, this study's applicability to us humans will require
further research. But, for now, incorporating flax seeds into
your diet has no downsides could help to make your arteries
more resistant to clogging.
