Are There Racial Differences in Normal Waist Size?

Recently, researchers have begun to explore why, overall,
African Americans tend to have larger waist sizes and more
abdominal fat than white Americans and other Americans.

A 2011 study from Purdue University, Department of Health and
Kinesiology, examined a database of 1,452 Americans. These
medical records are a part of a large study on the midlife of
Americans called, appropriately enough, The Midlife
Development in the United States cohort study.

What they found was surprising. Your waistline will tend to
increase if you perceive that you have been the victim of
everyday discrimination.

As the study observed: "The waist circumference of adult males
who reported consistently high levels of interpersonal everyday
discrimination increased 2.39 cm more than that of adult males
who consistently reported low levels of interpersonal everyday
discrimination."

And the same effect was seen among women. Those who
reported experiencing discrimination everyday had waist sizes
they were on average 1.88 cm more than those who did not
perceive that they experienced discrimination.

Note that the "perception" of discrimination alone is enough to
increase your waist size. This effect also is not necessarily
limited to African Americans. Presumably, white Americans who
perceive that they are experiencing discrimination could also see
an increase in waist circumference, and related health problems.

While the study did not hazard any guesses as to why perceived
discrimination would tend to increase your waist size, it is likely
that stress is at the heart of the relationship. Stress hormones
such as cortisol have long been linked with increased fat around
your abdomen. In periods of stress, cortisol instructs your body
to retain fat, especially around your mid-section. (Read more

cortisol makes it hard for you to lose weight.)
