Any irregularity in the armpit region is likely to be
uncomfortable. Be it a rash from a new deodorant, stubbly-
pain from a recent shave, or, in more serious cases, a lump,
we are usually well aware of what is going on underneath
our shoulders. But when the disturbance in ‘the pits’
happens to be the last irritant listed, some extra attention
and possible medical intervention may be in order. What
causes lumps under your armpit? Are there any natural
remedies that can help?

Causes of Armpit Lumps

Under armpit lumps, or localized lymphadenopathy in the
medical world, can be the result of a multitude of both
serious and non-threatening ailments.

In many cases an under armpit lump is caused by an allergic
reaction or a passing viral infection. Particularly in
adolescents, the introduction of a new antiperspirant or the
first shaky passes of a razor over previously unmolested hair
can result in a temporary lump under the armpit. Although
these lumps can be very painful, they usually reside in a few
weeks time.

On the other hand, under armpit lumps can be caused by the
likes of cancer, serious viral infections (such as AIDS),
vaccinations, and bacterial infections. Our armpits house
lymph nodes, which serve to catch infectious or cancerous
tumor cells. So when a lump under the armpit appears for no
reason, it is best to have it checked out right away. Women
need pay extra attention to under armpit lump, as its
appearance could be a warning sign of breast cancer.

Highlighting exactly how many people are affected by under
armpit lumps is a near impossible task due to unreported
cases and the variety of different causes, but it can be
reported that approximately 1 in 8 women will develop
breast cancer (one of the key causes of under armpit lump)
in her life.

For cases where under armpit lump is indicative of cancer,
the victim is limited to just a few options with regards to
remedying the situation, but below you will find a list of 10
different approaches to dealing with this pesky lump that can
quite literally ‘put you in the pits.’

Top 10 Remedies for

Under Armpit Lumps

1.
Do Nothing For Under Armpit Lumps Caused by Viral
Infections
– According to an article reviewed in 2009 by
Linda Vorvick, the Medical Director at the University of
Washington School of Medicine, under armpit lumps
resulting from a viral infection should eventually disappear
on their own accord. (Read more about remedies for
swollen
lymph nodes under your arms.)

2.
Remove the ‘Trigger’ When Lumps are Caused by Allergic
Reactions
– Usually you shouldn’t need a medical
professional to tell you that a painful and irritating reaction
to a substance or product should indicate immediate disuse
of said product, but Dr. Vorvick’s study does anyways. If
you develop an under armpit rash as a result of a new
deodorant or shaving cream, try no longer using that
product to end your problems.

3.
No Treatment Necessary for a Lump that is the Result of
Normal Breast Tissue
– In some cases a woman’s natural
breast tissue will extend to and even under her armpit.
According to Dr. Vorvick’s study, this protrusion should be
no cause for alarm, but, it doesn’t hurt to have the lump
checked out just to be sure that it isn’t an early indicator of
breast cancer.

4.
Treat Lumps Caused by Breast Cancer with Radiation
Therapy, Chemotherapy or Removal
– According to an
article reviewed in December of 2010 by David Zieve, the
Medical Director at A.D.E.M. Inc, breast cancer caused by can
be treated by directly removing the cancerous lump from the
lymph nodes under the armpits. In certain cases, radiation
therapy of chemotherapy might also be required.

5.
Treating Axillary Abscesses with Drainage – According to
findings published in the British Journal of Surgery in
December of 2005, many viral infections of the lymph nodes
can be remedied by draining the abscess. As noted earlier,
most lumps caused by infectious diseases will eventually
disappear on their own, but draining the abscess can make
the problem much less painful.

6.
Treat Axillary Abscesses with Antibiotics – Before diving
into a painful and sometimes expensive drainage of an under
armpit abscess, consult your doctor and look into antibiotics
as a potential source of treatment. According to the same
study mentioned in point 5, in some mild cases the
introduction of an antibiotic ointment to the infected area
could greatly reduce swelling, pain and inconvenience.

7.
Treat Under Armpit Lumps Caused by Cat-Scratch Disease
with Time, Antibiotics or Drainage
– According to a study
conducted by Dr. A.M. Margileth in 1997, cat-scratch disease
(which is a disease caused by…you guessed it, cat scratches)
often results in the swelling of the
lymph nodes under the
armpits and can be treated with antibiotics and drainage in
particularly painful cases, but generally requires no
treatment other than time.

8.
Use Voriconazole to Treat Under Armpit Lumps Caused by
Fungal Infections
– According to a study conducted by the
Duke University Medical Center in 2002, fungal infections can
be treated by applying the drug/cream voriconazole to the
infected site. In certain cases, sporotrichosis, a long-term,
chronic fungal infection can be the reason for the
appearance of lumps under the armpit.

9)
Apply Hydrocortisone Cream when Under Armpit Lump
Occurs Following a Vaccination
– According to a study
conducted by Dr. L. Goldman and Dr. Al. Schafer in 2011,
applying Hydrocortisone Cream, an over-the-counter drug
that can be purchased at any local pharmacy, helps to reduce
swelling and discomfort when under armpit lumps result
from an allergic reaction to a vaccination.

10)
Leave Lipomas Unmolested – A lipoma is a harmless
fatty growth that can occur anywhere on the body, including
under the armpit. Although a lipoma can be surgically
removed in extreme cases of discomfort, Dr. Kevin Berman at
the Atlanta Center for Dermatologic Disease advises in his
2011 study to leave the fatty growths unmolested.
