Nothing causes as much agony as constantly itchy skin in
children.  Many conditions can cause itchy skin in children.
Technically called "pruritis", dry itchy skin can be caused by
several medical conditions, including scabies, psoriasis and
allergies. Are there any natural remedies for itchy skin in
children? Do certain foods cause itchy skin in children?

Causes of Itching in Children

In addition to scabies and skin conditions such as psoriasis
and eczema, itching and scratching can be caused by
medications, food allergies, and even allergies to fabrics. In
infants and very young children, irritation and itching can be
caused by contact with plastic, latex and fabric in commercial
diapers. All these can cause constant itching and scratching
even at night as your toddler sleeps.

Update:

A little known condition called "Gianotti-Crosti-syndrome"
can also cause itching in newborns. This condition is a
reaction to the Epstein Barr virus. Usually, this condition also
causes outbreaks on the face, limbs and buttocks.

Contagious Scratching

But did you know that watching other people scratch can
also cause itching? Like yawning, itching can be induced by
the behaviors of other people around us. A 2011 study from
the Department of Dermatology Neurobiology & Anatomy
Regenerative Medicine of  Wake Forest University School of
Medicine studied the phenomenon of "contagious" itching.
They confirmed that in fact the phenomenon exists. As the
study concluded, "Human susceptibility to develop itch when
exposed to visual cues is confirmed; it appears to be
amplified in patients with AD. These findings suggest that
interpersonal social cues can dramatically alter the subjective
sensory experience of itch."

Here, based on research and tips from other Moms, are the
best natural remedies for itchy skin in children.

1.
Become a Detective. If your child has constantly itchy
skin, the first thing you need to do is to grab a notebook.
Start by writing down everything your child eats and when.
Record when you do his laundry and what you use.

Write down when he scratches. When it gets intense. You
should also take pictures of the rash, if any. Certain rashes
can indicate medical conditions such as
scabies, which will
require a prescription to clear up.

2.
Witch Hazel.  This old-fashioned solution has been around
for over a century. Called "witch hazel" in America and
"maravilla" in some Latin countries, it a made of a natural
herb called Hamamelis Virginiana.  Whatever you call it, it is
legendary for stopping itching from mosquito bites. But it
also stops itching in general.

Witch hazel does not require refrigeration. But I have found
that putting a bottle in the refrigerator for an hour adds just
that little extra bit of relief to a toddler's skin.

3.
Cucumber Mash.  This is a remedy we got with permission
from
chootoo.com.  Slice up cucumbers, add 3 cubes of ice
and blend it until is a fine mush.  Add a tablespoon of witch
hazel. The resulting cucumber mash is heavenly to itchy skin.

4.
Aloe Gel. Aloe is a great general remedy for itchy, irritated
skin.

Aloe, whose scientific name is "Aloe barbadensis", has been
studied both for its ability to relieve itching and skin irritation
and ,conversely, for its ability to
cause allergic reactions.

For this reason, it is important to test a small patch of skin
with aloe vera before using it generally to relieve itching.
You could end up making the problem worse.

5.
Get Rid of the Milk.  You have to change his diet.  Milk is
the cause of many food allergies in children. It can cause
itching all over the body and congestion which can lead to
child snoring. It's hard to eliminate milk entirely from a
toddlers' diet.   Try reducing the cow's milk for a week to
see if the itching gets better. That includes cheese, yogurt
made from milk etc. Use soy products instead just for a
week. Silk is a soy milk which my children like. (Read more
about possible
health dangers from cow's milk.)

6.
Dump the Wheat and Gluten.  Eliminate all wheat-- toast,
cereal, etc. Many children are allergic to gluten found in
wheat and other products. You have to read all labels and
become a gluten-police.  Watch him for a week or two to see
if his symptoms get better. ( Read more about the

foods to keep your child healthy.)

7.
Avoid Seeing Other People Scratch. Itching and scratching
can be "contagious" behavior.  Try to keep your children
from seeing other people, especially other children, scratch,
because research suggests that this will provoke even more
itching.  One of the best strategies if you suspect contagious
itching is causing your child top scratch, is to distract him
with a game, a favorite video or playtime.
