Singer, actress and dancer, Beyoncé Knowles shares a
struggle with millions of less famous women ---maintaining
a healthy weight.  Her recent performance on the Oscars
has spawned numerous commentaries about her apparent
weight gain.

Judging from pictures of her taken over the past 4 years,
Beyonce's weight has fluctuated significantly from her
slimmest look in the film "Dreamgirls" to her appearance
last week at the Hugh Jackman-hosted 2009 Oscars, where
she appeared to be about 10 to 15 pounds heavier than in
her "Dreamgirls" role.

Beyonce' has acknowledged using a form of the "master
cleanse" diet in preparation for her role in Dream Girls.

We at CollectiveWizdom do not endorse this or any other
celebrity diet. In particular, what we have seen in the
"master cleanse" used by Beyonce' and others is that it is
really not a diet. It is a
fast.  As such, it should only be
undertaken under the strict guidance of a medical doctor.

As a general rule, fasts are dangerous.  They are a form of
controlled starvation. Because you don't eat food, they are
effective, to be sure. You lose weight. But they are
absolute disasters for your digestive system.

Here is the Master Cleanse Diet (also called the Maple Syrup
Diet or the Cayenne Pepper Diet) reportedly used by
Beyonce and others.

2 tablespoons (1 fluid ounce) freshly squeezed lemon or
lime juice (approx. 1/2 lemon)

2 tablespoons (1 fluid ounce) organic Grade B maple

1/10 Teaspoon or more cayenne pepper - as much as you
can comfortable cope with

1 Cup (8 fluid ounces) purified or spring water

Those who follow this diet believe that it eliminate toxins
and congestion that have built up in the body, and credit it
with helping them lose weight and reduce stomach fat,
increase energy, and even alleviate some chronic diseases.

Beyonce' followed this diet for 14 days and lost 22 lb (10
kg) for her role in the 2006 movie Dreamgirls. Howard
Stern’s cohost Robin Quivers claims to have lost 73 lb (33
kg) using the Master Cleanse. Actor Jared Leto used the
diet to drop 62 lbs (28 kg) he gained to play ‘Mark David
Chapman’  on the Master Cleanse Diet .
